When someone in our community faces a challenge, we show up for each other. Because who else is going to protect us but us? The LABWC is where Black workers share the tools and information we all need to better advocate for ourselves and our peers in the workplace. When we collectively fight for our rights, we win.

A New Way of Life Reentry Program is a nationally acclaimed organization that works to help women to rebuild their life after incarceration to build dignity, empower, and build leadership skills.

A New Way of Life Reentry Program services include but not limited to:

  • Advocate against discrimination for people with arrest or conviction histories
  • Assist with court appearances and applying for public assistance
  • Offer free legal clinics to help individuals reduce, reclassify and expunge criminal convictions
  • Offer pro bono client representation in Family Law and Probate Court

 

National Domestic Violence Hotline provides essential tools and support to help survivors of domestic violence 24/7. The Hotline is operated by highly-trained, expert advocates to offer free, confidential, compassionate support, crisis intervention information in over 200 languages.

Handyworker program is administered by City of Los Angeles Housing Department (LAHD) helps people living with disabilities and senior to correct safety hazards and health hazards. Handyworker program parters with locally licensed general contractors for minor home repairs for both renters (up to $600) and home owners (up to $5,000).

They can provide residents help with common repairs/installments including, but not limited to:

  • Wheelchair ramps
  • Handrails
  • Doors and locks
  • Flooring
  • Outlets
  • Toilets

Volunteers of America Los Angeles (VOALA) offers a broad scope of programs and services to residents across Los Angeles. They work to empower and transform the lives of vulnerable populations including at-risk youth, under-served communities, women and men return from correctional institutions, people challenged with addictions and substance abuse and individuals and families impacted by homelessness.

 

Volunteers of America Los Angeles can help provide workers support including but not limited to the following

  • Adults who need help with homelessness, drug addiction and re-entry back into the community
  • Single mothers, female veterans, young women exiting the foster care system
  • Veterans and their families with mental health, employment housing, and case management
  • Children’s early education

FamilySource Centers (FSC) offers free work, family, educational, and family support services for low-income Los Angeles residents. FamilySource Centers works to find resources to increase families income, establish financial security, and build academic success.

 

FamilySource Centers can help provide workers support including but not limited to the following:

  • Pre-Employment and Employment support
  • Adult Education
  • Leadership Training
  • Parenting Classes
  • Income Tax Preparation
  • Child Support Referral

The Los Angeles City Attorney Office provides free Community Mediation and Public Safety Mediation services to Los Angeles residents and businesses utilizing the Dispute Resolution Program (DRP). The process is confidential, voluntary, and free of charge.

Community Mediation includes but not limited to, the following:

  • Labor-Employment
  • Landlord-Tenant
  • Family-Domestic
  • LGBTQ+

Public Safety mediation is a program supported in cooperation with Dispute Resolution Program and public safety agencies, including:

  • Los Angeles Police Department (Community-Police Unification (CPU) program)
  • Los Angeles Fire Department (Community Mediation Partnership)

Inner City Law advocates for equitable housing policies and provide legal services to prevent and curb homelessness for low-income, working-poor families, immigrants, people who are disabled or living with HIV/AIDS, and homeless veterans..

 

In the area of housing, they can provide support with:

  • Advocate for policies for affordable housing
  • Protections against unjust evictions
  • Assist veterans with health services, housing and disability benefits
  • Expanded supportive services for chronically homeless individuals
  • Advocates for existing laws ensure slumlords maintain their buildings and face consequences for taking advantage of tenants

The Neighborhood Legal Services of Los Angeles County (NLSLA) offers free legal help to individuals, families and communities across Los Angeles County. Some of their services include: worker’s rights, healthcare, housing and clean slate initiatives.

 

In the area of worker’s rights, they can provide workers support with:

  • Legal advice regarding unemployment benefits
  • Legal advice for State Disability Insurance
  • Recovering unpaid wages including overtime and meal & rest breaks
  • Work health and safety issues regarding COVID-19

The Targeted Local Hire Program (TLH) offers alternate job pathways into entry-level City positions that are paid, full-time, on-the-job training. Targeted Local Hire provides individuals with the opportunity to be randomly selected for referral to various City departments in order to be assessed and considered for entry-level jobs.

The Targeted Local Hire Program program seeks to target and recruit individuals from underserved and vulnerable communities, though anyone can apply:

  • Veterans
  • Designated Zip Codes
  • Formerly Incarcerated
  • Persons with Disabilities
  • Transgender Individuals
  • Unhoused and Formerly Unhoused
  • Older Workers
  • Foster Youth, Transition Age Youth, Disconnected Youth
  • Former Gang Members

UNITE HERE- Local 11 hosts The Hospitality Training Academy (HTA) which provides an array of workforce development, training and apprenticeship programs to develop and instruct low-income, marginalized individuals into the hospitality industry.

 

The 8-week long program is free to all students that offers top-quality vocational training with classroom instruction and hands-on work in a fully equipped kitchen.
